Sampling rate is the rate at which digital pieces of audio information (called samples) appear in a track. Simply put, a higher sampling rate will result in a higher quality audio resolution. Some plugins oversample during their processing to give this effect. Bit depth is the dynamic range of a track. For about every 1 bit, 6 dB is represented. When going from one higher bit depth to a lower bit depth, dither is required to smooth out quantization distortion resulting from throwing out the lower bits. Hi/High Resolution Audio EXPLAINED - Is it worth it? (192kHz/96kHz & 24-bit)

Hi/High res audio means music files recorded at 24-bit and higher than 44.1kHz sampling rates (often 48kHz, 96kHz and 192kHz). High definition audio promises "better than CD quality", and is being offered by companies like Apple and Sony. But can you notice the difference? Will your library of songs suddenly become more realistic and lifelike? And is the price that you pay (for devices like the expensive Pono Player) actually worth it? It is true that the higher resolution has benefits over CD when it comes to dynamic range and extended frequency response. But the files take up far more space on your hard disk for a quality improvement that's all but negligible. In all honesty, the loudness war, recording techniques etc make a far bigger difference in the end result than high-res audio ever will. ==== Hey, I'm HandyAndy and thanks so much for watching my video! Early CD digital masters used to be sent to pressing plants on U-matic video tapes, and the digital information was modulated into the analogue video signal. 44.1kHz was chosen because it resulted in the highest data rate that was supported by both PAL and NTSC cassettes. The reason why 96k (and later 192k) became standard in the pro audio world was because it was difficult to build an anti-aliasing low-pass filter that would cut off at 22.05kHz without attentuating the signal any more than was necessary. But for a consumer format, the oversampling on modern DACs has kind of bypassed that requirement. [6] Yes, they aren't necessary for a playback-only consumer format. But in the pro sound engineering field, I must admit that they are quite useful.

Tam Lin (The Glasgow Reel) - Celtic Fiddle Tune!

Tam Lin is one of my favorite Celtic fiddle tunes! If you like this video, please subscribe for more videos like this coming up! =) I was asked if I could make a tutorial for playing Tam Lin, so here is a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpUIxg1Mnbk It's geared more towards beginners and playing by ear. I'm a little nervous and awkward talking to the camera, but hopefully it's still useful! =) Sheet music for this particular version can be found here: http://ift.tt/28LQkaM Several people at an Irish session that I go to aren't quite as big fans of this tune (especially the flute players...), but I think it's tons of fun! I made a backing track to go with it so that I can play it whenever I want! After finishing school and following a career path that has nothing to do with music, I realized that I missed playing. It was like I put a part of me on a shelf and focused on being a big Career Woman.. I've always wanted to be independent, but that doesn't necessarily mean one is happy.. This past summer I started playing a lot. It has brought back so many good memories, and has been something I look forward to each day. I also have realized that part of what used to drive me to practice was the concept of having something to practice for. I love to play, but I slip into playing the same pieces over and over again if there isn't extra guidance to try something new. Since I can't afford enough time to devote to private lessons, I'm hoping starting a YouTube will push me to explore new musical worlds and focus on improving my playing. I'm amazed at how much filming myself has pointed out so many flaws in my playing. My sense of intonation has greatly deteriorated from what I remember it being years ago before my music hiatus. I've also learned how difficult it is to record the violin! I know I hear the violin differently than the audience as it is right under my ear, but it has been interesting trying to record my playing. Next time, I think I need to set the recorder further back to prevent the sound from “cracking.” This was my first attempt at making a backing track. I hope you like the results—I had so much fun coming up with this! It's kind of quiet unless you wear headphones..hmm..not really sure how to fix that if it's a bass-heavy song? Also, I think YouTube shifted the audio ever so early--it makes the song almost look an eighth note ahead from the visual towards the end..hmm.. For those who may be wondering about software... Software used (for Macintosh): Garageband for attempted sound mixing Final Cut Pro for video editing Plugins for sound effects (I have A LOT to learn in this department..haha!): East West plugins – Goliath (my favorite so far!), Stormdrum II, Hollywood Strings, Spaces (See: soundsonline.com) Piano Keyboard: An old Casiotone CT-630 electric piano (61 keys) with a midi to USB adaptor Camera: Canon 70D; I've been super happy with this camera. Dancing Bear - American Fiddle Reel

Here is a really fun contra dance tune for the fiddle called The Dancing Bear! It's a super fun one to play! =D I added in a bunch of improvisation to change it up a bit - I hope you like it! =) This tune is so much fun that I was literally playing it over and over and over these past few weeks for hours. Sorry if you're my neighbor! =/ I really like the repeating melody with the changing chord - it sounds so neat to me. More tunes need to do that! =) This tune was written by Bob McQuillen in 1978. He was a pianist from New Hampshire. At the top of the music for this tune, he wrote this: "I have a wonderful friend who is a Bear named Oso and this tune is for him because he likes it. Barry Nielson likes it too, and so its for him, too, with love from Mac." I hope you like this version of the tune! Morrison's Jig -- Fiddle Tune

Here is a fun Irish jig called Morrison's! I think the original name for this tune is "Stick Across the Hob," but I've only ever heard it referred to as "Morrison's Jig." I think it was James Morrison who made it popular, but that one of his band member's father wrote the tune. It's a neat tune to play! I thought it would sound good with a lot of bass and drums, so I tried to keep extra treble instruments to a minimum in the backing track. The locations in this video are the Rocky Mountain National Park. More specifically, they are at the lookout points along Trail Ridge Road. I've always wanted to take the drive up this road, and I thought this tune would go perfect with lots of cool mountain backgrounds. I'm definitely in the highlands -- That's for sure! It was super awkward playing this tune at the lookout points while lots of tourists were walking around, but people seemed positive about it. I edited the video to minimize the amount of people walking in the background, but the place was packed with tourists! It was really cold towards the top of the mountains...I definitely wasn't dressed appropriately for the alpine tundra in this video, but I had a coat off camera.. ^-^ If you ever take the same drive up Trail Ridge Road, dress with warm layers -- even if it's blistering hot in the cities at the base of the mountains. I also changed into normal clothing and went on some neat hikes! St. Anne's Reel + Sally Gardens

Here are two neat fiddle tunes, "St. Anne's Reel" and "Sally Gardens!" I think St. Anne's is Canadian, and Sally Gardens is Irish. I wanted to also include "St. Joseph's Reel" (also a neat Canadian tune) at the beginning, but I thought it would make the video too long. I think these tunes go well together, and they also are good transition tunes into polkas! St. Anne's is a really happy-sounding tune! I thought I'd play two versions, the first version is a more simplified version that I learned when I was younger, and the second version has a lot more notes; I learned it about a month ago. They both are really fun, but there is something really nice about the simple version. I think it's a little catchier and easier to listen to. (= Sally Garden's is one of those tunes that is really fun to play in sessions! For some reason, everywhere I go, I hear it played differently. I had the tune ingrained in my head differently than how the folks play it near where I live, and I clashed so badly when I tried to play it with everyone.. x_x;; I think I've finally learned a version that is really similar to their version, and I thought I'd make a video of it. Whenever I make a video of a tune, it becomes embedded in my mind so much more than all of the other tunes that I've learned over the years. It's interesting that when this tune is played slowly, it sounds kind of sad and melancholy, but it becomes a happy bouncy tune when it's sped up! It's weird how music can do that! Fall is just around the corner! A lot of these sunflowers aren't looking too happy anymore with the colder morning temperatures now happening. I hope to make a few videos with the pretty fall colors, but the season is usually really short where I live. SPONGE ~ Ragtime + Fiddle! (W.C. Simon, 1911)

Here is a neat Louisiana Ragtime tune called "Sponge!" It was composed by Walter C. Simon in 1911, in New Orleans. Ragtime is an American genre of music that was the predecessor of "Jazz." It's actually one of my favorite genres of music, and I really want to play more ragtime tunes on the fiddle! My mom used to play this song a lot on the piano when I was a kid, and I really wanted to play it on the violin. The original key wasn't very piratical for the violin, so I transcribed to an easier key. I also noticed that a lot of people play this song very slowly. To me, it sort of sounded almost like a funeral march when I played it that slowly with a violin. I bumped the speed up to 110 bpm, which I think made it a little more fun and cheerful. Since I've posted this, I've learned that this song is actually about prostitution..oh my! I guess that explains the creepy minor beginning that everyone always plays so haunting and slowly. : o Maybe I've ruined the song's meaning, but I prefer happy-sounding music. ^_^ This piece was kind of hard to play. I had to practice it a lot to be able to hit some of those notes that were pretty much only leaps of faith. Sometimes piano music doesn't translate very well into violin music... =/ It still was a lot of fun to play, and i hope that you enjoy listening to this version! =) I think I went a little overboard with the color effects...I really need to catch up on writing out sheet music this week, and I'm hoping to have this version written out soon.
